The village of Stickney was founded at a place called Mud Lake, which stretched from Harlem Avenue to Kedzie Avenue in the past. It received its name from Alpheus Beede Stickney, who was the first president of the Chicago Great Western Railroad. The village was incorporated on December 16, 1913, and in 1919, had about 100 houses and was surrounded by a forest preserve to the west, Forest View and the canal and highway to the south, a water treatment plant and industrial areas to the east, and the town of Berwyn and the village of Cicero to the north. The town is located 3 miles north of Midway Airport, 10 miles west of downtown Chicago, and 18 miles southeast of O’Hare International Airport.
